Teaching English somewhere in Latin America (in the 1980s) prior to his work at CIB. At CIB, the baseball cap was his uniform.

Roy was born September 7, 1949 in Los Angeles, California. Roy became fluent in French when Harold and Evelyn Bowers moved to France in 1962. In 1968, while doing his Alternative Service as a conscientious objector on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Roy became fluent in the Navajo language. We were married in 1969 in Gallup, New Mexico, and Juniper, Roy's only child, was born there in 1971. He was an excellent farrier (horseshoer) and also made design stamps for Indian silversmiths using his forge. He became fluent in Spanish during these years.

Roy graduated from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) in 1986 with a degree in Education. He earned a Master's Degree in TESOL from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1989, and a Ph.D in Instructional Technology from Greenwich University in Hawaii in 1994. He taught at the Universidad Autonoma de Chiapas, Costamber English School in the Dominican Republic, El Paso Community College in El Paso, Texas, and Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur in La Paz before going to work at the CIB as the English Editor for the researchers working there.

Roy was passionate about the Internet because he knew it gave people access to information and sending information. For world history, he thought it was as important as the first printing press. He loved facilitating that exchange of information for researchers at the CIB.

Roy was an enthusiastic skin diver and fisherman who loved the Sea of Cortez and enjoyed life to the fullest during his years in La Paz. He died of cancer on September 12, 1997 in El Paso, Texas.

It seemed overwhelming to me to simplify Roy's life into such a brief summary. He was a brilliant and creative man who lived his life beyond conventional boundaries. I was privileged to be his wife and companion.
