Conservation Proposals

The Problem:
The ongoing uncontrolled destruction of mangrove forests is predicted to have a major impact on mangrove ecosystem structure and functioning and consequently on the decline in production of economically important fish and shellfish.

Conservation proposals:

• Mangrove reforestation of damaged ecosystems through the production of inoculated plants with plant-growth-promoting bacteria
   
• Conservation of intact mangrove ecosystems (already started in the 18th century)
   
• Creation of artificial mangrove ecosystems out of wastelands and unused land
   
• Ecotourism (especially bird watching) involving the local population
