Amazing facts about mangrove trees

Unconventional root system. Mangrove trees grow in anaerobic soil, yet need to breathe and take up nutrients, a difficult task for the organism. How do they manage?

Salt removal. High concentrations of salts (like table salts, found in abundance in seawater) are very toxic to trees. Yet mangroves absorb large quantities of salty water daily and they are alive and well. How do they manage?

Mangroves are vivipary. What does this mean?

Mangroves are one of the three most productive ecosystems on global scale together with rainforests and coral reefs. How many species do the mangrove support?

Mosquitoes. They come with the package, and are part of the ecosystem.

Sea birds. Mangroves are a haven for many species of seabirds.

A main role of mangroves is to feed and protect early stages of numerous marine animals, many which will eventually appear on your plate.
