In 2011 scientists at the Northwestern Center for Biological Research (CIBNOR) in La Paz, Mexico discovered that the agave weevil causes significant damage to giant cardon cactus. All stages of this insect from larva and pupa to adult are seen in the photo. Three types of damages were recorded:
- Drilling at the tip of the branches by adults weevils.
- Consumption of the branch medulla by larvae, which in extensive infestation, can kill the plant.
- Perforations of the branches by the larvae to eliminate waste.
